A body wrongly fixed in time and space

To move ahead towards the future has never before seemed so far from truly starting.  There is something stiff, solid and compact about genuine freedom that is reflected in our burning skies, the skeletons of buildings totally exposed to the sun and mouths open with so much to say but in endless silence.  The body shows a need to expand within increasingly confined time and space, too small for so many aspirations and possibilities that we have hitherto believed unattainable.

We move ahead in our own bodies but always on pavements, motorways, railway lines designed by someone else, without ever understanding that among the thousands of possibilities, we choose the one that serves as the common denominator and thereby allow habit to submerge our limbs unconsciously.

Bodies and their heads are wrongly fixed in time and space. They are taught to occupy places very cautiously and to be extremely careful not to get hurt. Any hurt requires attention and when attentive, we look with our eyes. And to look with our eyes is to consume the world exactly as it is. And what if we look with our whole body? And we walk backwards towards our destiny so that we can see what’s behind us?

The 3rd PEDRA DURA – Festival de Dança do Algarve seeks to find a slender volatility, slippery dances, liquid ideas of possible freedom that come when artists, public and territory coexist together. We are here so that we may share our thoughts and dive into an emptiness that is so filled we barely know where to place our feet and where the secret is to get together under the same sky and lean our chins against our neighbours’ shoulders, hold hands and abandon our body to itself so that it may escape itself and return even more replete.

So that we may dance, always, to the end.
